Since 2003, Wheatley Homes South has invested more than £200 million in improving and maintaining tenants’ homes. Its work extends across the towns and villages of Scotland’s third-largest region, with a focus on good-quality homes, responsive services and the needs of local communities.

The Roles

We are seeking individuals to join the Wheatley Homes South Board as Independent Non-Executive Members, bringing relevant experience and sound judgement to the organisation’s strategic direction.

Working with fellow Board members and the executive team, you will help set priorities, scrutinise performance and ensure that the organisation’s plans are supported by sound finances and effective governance. Customers and communities will be central to your decisions.

As a Board Member, you will:

  • Contribute to the organisation’s strategic direction and long-term objectives.
  • Scrutinise performance, financial viability and the management of risk.
  • Provide constructive challenge and support to the executive team.
  • Ensure that customers’ views and needs inform Board decisions.
  • Uphold high standards of governance, accountability and integrity.

The Experience We Are Seeking

  • We are looking for individuals with housing management experience gained within the housing sector. We will also consider, individuals with operational service delivery experience in a parallel sector, such as the NHS or local government.
  • Qualified accountants with finance experience who can contribute to the Board’s oversight of financial performance, planning and long-term viability.

Across these backgrounds, we are looking for people who can think strategically, assess information and challenge proposals constructively. You should be able to apply your experience to the Board’s responsibilities and demonstrate a clear commitment to the organisation and its customers.

Location

Board meetings are held at the Brasswell office in Dumfries on Wednesdays, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Meetings are primarily held in person, with attendance via Teams available in exceptional circumstances.

Time Commitment

You should expect to commit approximately 10 days each year, including:

  • Six Board meetings, with time for reading and preparation.
  • An annual strategy workshop.
  • Two Group-wide events.
  • Continuing Professional Development, as appropriate.
  • An annual appraisal meeting with the Chair.

Terms of Appointment

The initial appointment is for three years. This is a voluntary, unremunerated position, with expenses reimbursed.
